Who Says You Can’t Have It All?

Who says you can’t have it all?

You know — just a stellar high visibility career, a perfect family with billboard-worthy family photos, peak postpartum eating habits, workout routine, and mental health, freshly laundered clothes in your Marie Kondo-ed closet in your spotless house, babies that sleep through the night and actually eat the dinner you make, and a Pinterest style bento box school lunch game?
Who says you can’t have it all?

Oh, just everyone. Just everyday.
Life is HARD mama. Sometimes I struggle just to remember all the things I need to do on any given day let alone get them done. My house looks more like a tornado than Marie Kondo; my lunchbox game more like cookie crumbles than cookie cut fruit and sandwich shapes.

However, I learned a valuable lesson when I became a mama, and I don’t sell myself short just for getting through each day. When I have the fortune of a professional accomplishment here or there, I celebrate that because I feel worthy of being celebrated, especially juggling so many different roles and hats on any given day.

Three years ago I was sworn in as a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.

SCOTUS Swearing In
My 9 week old was enjoying his first appearance at the Supreme Court of the United States

It’s one of the proudest moments of my professional life, and was all the sweeter because I got to bring my 9 week old with me. I’m pretty sure he is the record keeper for youngest person to witness an oral argument and poop in the gallery.

October 11, 2016:  I was sworn in along with other members of the Military Spouse JD Network

I don’t know if I’m a great lawyer, but I love my job and I’m proud of my accomplishments in my nearly decade of practice. Mamas – don’t sell yourself short. You might not be able to have it all or do it all according to society’s definition, so define what “it all” means to you and rock it. Have a great Tuesday!
