And no, it’s not the new baby! Bet I fooled you! Today I’m introducing someone that I looked long and hard for and prayed much about – and I’m so glad to say that I feel like God has delivered!
So without further ado, I’m so happy to be introducing Ms. Chloe Sasha-Lee Sandberg, from Johannesburg, South Africa! Chloe will be joining our family at the beginning of August for one year as our au pair!
What is an Au Pair?
An au pair is a child caretaker from another country that lives with and becomes part of a host family for 12-24 months. Au pairs typically take on a share of the family’s responsibility for childcare as well as some light housework, in exchange for a monetary allowance and room/board. Au Pair’s provide up to 45 hours of childcare coverage per week, can drive children to/from school or activities, and share their country’s language and culture with their host family!
Why an Au Pair?
With the addition of baby #3 any day now, it just made more sense for our family to bring someone to our home to share care taking responsibilities for the new baby as well as assist with Nico and Gabriella. We are soon to be outnumbered, after all! So while we are a family of 4 at the moment, within days we’ll expand to a family of 5 and within a month a family of 6! Go big or go home! Nico and Gabriella will continue with their Montessori schooling next year, but the new baby will stay at home and be cared for by mom, dad and Chloe.
Why I Picked Chloe
Within moments of first connecting through our agency, Cultural Care Au Pair, I had a great feeling about Chloe. Our conversation was genuine and heartfelt- we both asked challenging questions and picked each other’s brains. I felt like our values largely lined up. Chloe was not the most experienced childcare provider I interviewed nor was she the most experienced driver, but I felt like her heart and head were so aligned with the kind of person I want my very young children spending a year of their lives with, that I knew neither of those things were a big deal. And I don’t say that to diminish her experience, she has lots – but it simply wasn’t the reason that I chose her.
I am absolutely looking forward to hosting Chloe and making her part of our family this next year. I am certain that we will have a wonderful time together, that she will quickly get up to speed on my very intentional parenting choices and our Montessori lifestyle for the kids, and I know that all three of them will adore her. We cannot wait for her to arrive in Pittsburgh. I’m also very happy that I will have the month of August on maternity leave so that we can really get to know each other better at the start and spend time fully integrating her into our life and routine.
We can’t wait until you get here, Chloe!
Q&A with Chloe
You can find Chloe on Instagram at @Miss.Chlo_Chlo
What kinds of activities do you enjoy? I was a drum majorette for eight years, from 2009-2016. I am so passionate about it, and grateful for the many essential life skills it taught me like self-discipline, time management and self-confidence, all of which I try to use as a platform to inspire young children. I have been coaching the Grace Trinity Majorettes for the last two years (find them on Instagram HERE); we practice 3 times/week to prepare for our competitions.
What are your creative outlets? I have been modeling for about 3 years now; I love the camera. This work has greatly improved my self-confidence. My ultimate goal in this area is to enter Miss South Africa in 2024; for now, I am trying to gain as much experience as possible in the industry!
What do you enjoy for fun? I love traveling and shopping. In 2016 I visited Croatia and Paris, which were absolutely unforgettable. I 2018 I traveled to America for a drum majorette competition and had the absolute best time.
Why do you want to be an au pair? I love children with all my heart; I want to make a positive impact on their lives. That is true even beyond my role as an au pair- I want to inspire children everywhere and hope that they can one day say, “because of you, I will never give up on my dreams.” I am particularly excited about the opportunity to travel to the United States for this year, to gain international qualifications and experience and spend time with the family.
Why did you choose the Thompson family? I chose the Thompson family because from the moment we started connecting with each other I immediately had a good feeling about it; we gelled so well as if we had known each other for years! I prayed for a God-fearing family because I love attending church. I’m a big believer in my faith. While reading through the Thompson application I was so amazed that we actually have a lot in common in that area and automatically I was like, “This is it! This is the family I’m choosing without a doubt!” I still do pray about it and as time is getting closer I am so excited. I love the fact that we stay in contact all the time and we communicate which is a good thing. I admire the love that Krista and Brandon have for their kids; it is inspiring. I can’t wait to love them even more… I think I already do!
